What language do you speak? Part 1

French, Italian, Thai?

We don’t teach foreign languages at aps, but what we are interested in is the internal language we all speak. Self-talk is a language we all share and it can have dramatic effects on the things that we do.
This article series will address aspects of self-talk and the influence it has on the choices we make and life we create.

Part 1: Impossible I’m Possible

To do anything you must believe it’s possible, no matter how likely or unlikely. Yet often we tell ourselves, or accept limiting beliefs of others, that it is impossible. If it’s impossible in your mind then it will be impossible in reality.

“If you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” (Henry Ford)

Here’s an example – ‘I can’t lift that weight’

You have essentially declared the task impossible, a definitive statement with no other possibilities.

An alternative mind-set for the same situation is – ‘How can I lift this weight?’

You have now declared the task possible, an opportunity to be mastered. By simply making the task a possibility in your mind it automatically broadens your horizon making you creative, proactive and open minded to new ideas.

How many times a day do you tell yourself you can’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t (‘ants’)? Or more still how often are you even conscious of your self-talk. If you find yourself with an ‘ant’, instead ask what conditions need to exist, and how do I make them a reality, so that I can, could, would or should. At the very least if it is possible in your mind you allow yourself the opportunity to have a go.

‘The only limit is the one you set yourself, are you ready to go beyond?’ (Felix Baumgartner)
