Coconut – A Great Source of Healthy Fats

Coconut Oil is considered about 90% saturated fat with around 50% of its make-up being lauric acid. The only other abundant source of lauric acid found in nature is in human breast milk! This stuff is seriously beneficial.

Some of Coconuts benefits include;

  • Boosts metabolism and promotes weight loss and getting lean – Using coconut in your diet has been shown to improve thyroid function dramatically. In the 1940s farmers attempted to use coconut in cattle feed to fatten up the animals, instead they got lean and active.
  • Antiviral/bacterial/fungal properties – This helps on a couple of levels. It aids digestion and gut flora promoting a healthy gut, which improves syndromes like leaky gut. It also helps boost immunity and fight infections.

Uses for Coconut;

  • Coconut oil is stable at high temperatures with a smoking point of around 177C; so it retains all of its nutrition during cooking (unlike most oils and fats). It can also add fantastic flavour to a meal. If you aren’t a big fan of the coconut flavour then use coconut butter, all the same benefits with a neutral flavour. It also acts as a great binder when making nut/fruit bars. Coconut oil can also be used for smoothies, spreading on vegetables, adding to tea and coffee, mixed with yoghurt or simply as a spoonful on its own.
  • Coconut flour is a great healthy replacement for typical grains, if you enjoy baking, so you can enjoy dessert indulgences guilt free.
  • Coconut water is a very nutritious drink and contains natural electrolytes making it a great option for replacing processed sports drinks.
  • Coconut meat provides a snack which is high in healthy fats, with good amounts of protein and a low glycemic index. A cup of shredded, raw coconut meat contains 27 grams of fat, mostly saturated; 3 grams of protein; and 12 grams of carbohydrates, (good source of fibre).
  • Body care – Coconut is a great natural moisturiser and promotes anti-aging unlike other synthetic, toxic, carcinogenic skin care products.

What to look for when buying

Always opt for raw organic virgin coconut products. The term extra virgin has no meaning and is seemingly nothing more than a marketing ploy.
