20:15 – Things to do and Things to Avoid This Year – Part 1

For some, New Year’s Resolutions are an effective ritual to begin the year with, while for others they are silly clichés that people never stick to.

Here at aps we believe in setting goals and working hard to achieve them whatever the date, but the start of a new year is as good a opportunity as any to set some new habits and make a change in your lifestyle.

So if you haven’t yet got any resolutions or goals this year, we’re here to suggest 20 things to do and 15 things to avoid in order to have the healthiest 2015 possible!

20 things to do in 2015

  1. Dream Big – When making goals it’s always suggested that they are kept realistic. Now this is true, as aiming to be able to walk on water is probably only going to end in disappointment, but realistic doesn’t have to mean small. Be ambitious with your goals this year, couple it with a well thought out plan and who’s to say where the limit is for what you can achieve.

  3. Set Small Goals – Being ambitious with major goals will help you go further than you thought possible, but small goals help you stay motivated and on course throughout the year. Chunk your major goal into small parts and you’ll get to feel the satisfaction of achievement throughout the year.
  4. Be Hydrated – Trust us. Everything works better when you are correctly hydrated.
  5. Sleep 7-9 hours a night – There aren’t many problems that a good night’s sleep won’t fix. String night after night together and you’ll soon feel like a new person.
  6. Make yourself physically useful – Yes sitting on a recumbent bike or a rowing machine for hours on end may help burn off those extra Christmas Calories, but they’re not going to help you clear out the garage or pick your kids up over and over again. Start exercising using actual human movement patterns (pulling, pushing, squatting, bending, lunging and twisting) and not only will you be fitter and leaner, but stronger and more stable too. Win-Win!
  7. Think Positive – If you aren’t positive about yourself, your day or what you are doing why would anyone else be? It requires practice the same as any other skill. Just try to notice when you are thinking negatively, take a couple of breaths and turn your thinking in the opposite direction.

  9. Be mobile – Being stiff and inflexible becomes more and more of an issue as we get older. Get on top of this each day this year by generally moving around and addressing any areas you know are overly tight.
  10. Smile – It’s amazing what a smile can do. Next time you’re down, tired, stressed or uncomfortable, take a moment to stop and smile. Just take a breath and find something or think of something that puts a smile on your face.
  11. Fill your body with nutrients – Natural, high quality foods. Your body will thank you.
  12. Try something new – There are lots of things to try in this world and too often people dismiss things without trying them. This year make it your goal to at least find out for sure whether you like something or not.
  13. Challenge yourself – You grow as a person more when challenged than when taking it easy. Find something to challenge yourself and take you out of your comfort zone. Work, sport, fitness or any new hobby are all good places to embrace a challenge.

  15. Take time for yourself – Everyone needs it and everyone wants it. Find sometime for yourself each day and don’t feel guilty about it.
  16. Talk nicely to yourself – It may be touted as the first sign of madness, but we all self talk. It may not be out loud, but we all have that inner voice we listen to and we often talk worse of ourselves than we ever would of someone else. Speak to yourself as you would when trying to motivate another person. The more you tell yourself you’re useless the more likely you are to believe it. Why not tell yourself you’re awesome?!
  17. Be grateful – Thinking of a few things each day that you’re grateful for helps keep things in perspective and your focus on the positives. Things are rarely as bad as they seem.
  18. Start / Close your day – This helps focus your efforts and calm a busy mind. Know what you want to achieve in your day and when you’re done make a note of where you got to and what still needs doing so you know where to start tomorrow. That way your brain doesn’t spend all night worrying about it.
  19. Help Others – We all need help from time to time, so take the opportunity to help people out when you can. What goes around comes around.
  20. Be Kind – It takes very little effort to be kind to people and it’s something we would all like to experience from others.

  22. Surround yourself with positivity – Our environment has a huge effect on the person we are. Find and spend time with people that will help you achieve your goals this year.
  23. Get outside – You’ll feel better for it. Again, just trust us.
  24. Put your health high on your priority list – The healthier we can be the easier it will be to achieve everything else. Spend some time each day looking after yourself so you can continue to do all the things you love.
